Easy August Family Trip

Anonymous
We're looking for an easy August vacation to take with our two kids (ages 7 and 5) and my in laws the week before school starts. Obviously, lots of things in the usual places are booked already.

Any ideas for an intergenerational vacation spot? Convenient to Northern Virginia and Chicago (flights are fine).

We were considering the Poconos or Lewes or upstate NY.

One of the nice lake towns north and west of Chicago? Like Lake Geneva or Green Lake.

I like so many places in New England. There are so many options there.

I'd do upstate New York or Woodloch Resort in the Poconos (if they have rooms still). Sky top Lodge would be good for those ages, but a whole week might be too long.

Lewes is terrible with jellyfish in August.

I’ve literally loved every New England trip we’ve taken.

With ORD and DC you could fly pretty much anywhere in NY state and New England.
Where do you want to stay?
Out in nature in a rental house? At a hotel? In a town? A resort?

DP here. These types of posts are totally unhelpful to people not at all familiar with the area. Could be more specific at all? This is like someone asking about a resort in the Caribbean and a person answering “I love all Caribbean resorts!”

Chicago is the best

But it's my hometown lol

Most destinations in upstate NY and New England are pretty laid back. What kind of activities does your family like to do? Do you want to visit one place and stay there, or are you open to exploring?

White Mountains, NH
Maine- look for a place an hour or so from Acadia (closer places will be booked).
Adirondacks
Finger Lakes NY
New River gorge VA

Upper Peninsula MI

Sky top in poconos is great for 4-5 days. Old fashioned all inclusive hotel with nature hikes, swimming, fishing, biking, etc.

Do you like city oriented vacations? Then look at Toronto with a nite in Niagara Falls. Or since you are both near major airports, you can fly anywhere really. Go to Charleston and spend a some days at Hilton Head, Disney or a Florida beach.
