Frustrated with DC childcare subsidy options

Anonymous
I am so exhausted from touring childcare facilities that are on the D.C. childcare subsidy list. The quality of teachers in many of these places is just not where it should be. I’ve seen teacher aides—male teacher aides—with their jeans hanging low and their underwear showing, and honestly, it’s just not a good experience. The overall lack of professionalism in some of these centers is frustrating, especially when we’re talking about the care and development of our little ones.

I’m at the point where I’m ready to give up on this list altogether. Has anyone actually found a quality center through the subsidy program? Or is it just this bad across the board?

Sorry I don’t have an answer to this question but I would encourage you to look broadly at other preschools and if you find one you really love talk to the director about scholarship options. A number of preschools will provide scholarships on a case by case basis but don’t advertise it.

Most day cares pay their workers minimum wage, even in the best centers. Those that take subsidies, are probably bare bones.
