I have come to the conclusion that this particular FF mom wishes that her husband had been okay with the commute from that part of Herndon to wherever his job is so they could have been zoned to Oakton. She's devastated about it, really. |
I mean Langley, of course. She wishes she could have sent her girls to Langley. |
Totally agree with this. Not to mention, it has a pool so if your kid is a swimmer, this a huge plus, definitely beats having to drive them to the rec center. |
Yep. I think I like the idea of a smaller school even more than a closer school. The high schools around here are too big. I went to a high school with about 1600 kids and that felt plenty big. There were a lot of opportunities, and everyone could get involved somewhere. And you didn’t have to be a top athlete to make the sports teams. The school was pretty successful at sports. The best people on the teams were still really good, but kids who weren’t quite as good still got to be a part of things. I find it sad to hear some kids around here work on a sport for years and still can’t even get on the JV team. And then they’re picking a random sport they might not even like all that much just so they can be on a team. |
There's no way that pool stays there. The only fcps with a pool is TJ, a magnet school. Being the smallest school they'll get rid of it to make room for more students and to limit liability |
| Get rid of the pool, turn it into two floors with classrooms, and bam you have the renovation needed for the capacity to hit 2,000 students. Seems like it's worth them exploring, as opposed to converting multiple other spaces for the same/similar capacity. Not a sermon, just a thought. |
TJ had a pool? What was the HS before it was TJ that it had a pool? Didn’t think any FCPS schools had pools at any time? |
That would be really stupid to get rid of it. There aren’t enough indoor pools around here as it is. It could be rented out on the weekends just like fields and gyms are. Where does Southlake swim team currently practice? Maybe they could move there. Reid mentioned at a meeting that they are hoping to use it for water safety classes for kids in the county. Who cares if it’s the only high school with a pool? That’s not uncommon. Nearby groups and teams rent out the space when school is not in session. It’s a shame that pool wasn’t being rented out this whole time. KAA used to rent out their gyms for community use. |
| I hope they keep the pool! It will be a big draw for students to opt in and is a good asset to have instead of transporting kids to limited rec center pools. |
These are all guesses: I assume Westfield uses the Cub Run pool. Chantilly used to go to Oak Marr--not sure if they go there or Cub Run now. I guess Herndon uses the Herndon Community center. I think South Lakes may use Reston CC? In any case, I would think it would be helpful for all FCPS schools for swim meets, etc. And, as someone else mentioned could be a source of funding for the school system. It might need to be turned over to Parks and Recreation in some way. |
Part of why some swim teams practice so early in the morning is limited lane space. Having another pool for community use could save some kids from having to wake up and swim at an ungodly hour, or at least have a shorter ride to those early practices. A few more minutes of sleep every day adds up. |
Chantilly uses Cub run. I think Centreville too. |
20171 Herndon cannot use the Herndon community center also Oak Marr is much closer for most. |
TJ doesn’t have a pool. |
Reid said she would keep the pool during today's session. |
