I posted a while ago about the treatment of hypermobile people with methylated folate (and I significant link between hypermobility and neurodivergence).
Here is more evidence. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/autism-leucovorin-medicine-folic-acid/ The study used leucovorin calcium. If you have trouble getting prescription, try methylated folate or folonic acid. And avoid "folic acid," the synthetic form of folate which attaches to the receptors. Folic acid is found in vitamin pills and enriched flour/processed foods. Pregnant women should avoid synthetic folate and take methylated folate instead, with doctors advisement. |
I find this research so interesting. I tested negative for the MTHFR mutation. But while pregnant taking folic acid made me feel so sick I literally could not keep it down. By my 2nd and third pregnancy I just gave up taking it. My first does struggle with neurodivergence, he’s the only one who had extra folic acid in utero. I realize it’s just anecdotal but based on my experience I am curious about potential correlations between folic acid advocacy and neurodivergence. |
Perhaps it was the sudden drop in folic acid (from taking it and then stopping) that caused the neurodivergence as opposed to the taking of it? I agree that lack of folic acid is probably a major cause. My question is that it used to cause Spina Bifida - we don't see much of that anymore but we do see the autism. |
In pregnancy, take natural sources of folic acid - beans and lentils, veggies, nuts and seeds.
|
Folic acid is an influence well before actual pregnancy. |
Folic acid blocks the absorption of folate, which is why many find relief on gluten free or keto diets. |
Good point but bears repeating- avoiding enriched flour and sticking with non enriched products would have the same effect. |
This is very interesting and now the thought has to be with pregnancy supplements possibly being the cause.
Because most autistic and neurodivergent kids seem to come from middle and upper middle class getting proper supplements and care. Although I still think age of mother plays a very important part that society doesn’t want to admit. |
While just an antidote, me and all my special needs friends with high functioning ASD kids (mainstream school, socially quirky), it is all our oldest child that’s neurodivergent. So the materal age doesn’t make sense bc we were all in late 20s. Now the one friend that had a moderate ASD boy that requires a special school bc he’s not that verbal, it is her last child out of many. |
They do not “come from middle and upper class”. Middle and upper class have more access to diagnostics. |
+1 yep |
I’m so jaded. Everything related to ASD is a bust - the BS stem cell trial, the fecal transplants, now another rabbit hole with folinic acid… |
It's not a rabbit hole and it's not a cure all. People on this board seem to be thinking that folic acid causes autism. That's not what any of this means. Nor does it cure autism. It has been proven to help verbal skills. Period. There is also anecdotal evidence it helps people with hypermobility. In any case, knowing you or your child has a vitamin deficiency- you treat the deficiency. Also, folonic acid and speech in ASD has been known for years. Who makes money off treating it? Not big pharmacy. Not speech language pathologists. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5794882/ |
Note that study was from 9 years ago.
Also, neurodivergent people have many vitamin ans mineral deficiencies. Your doctor isn't tracking them, are they? No one cares more than you. You must do your own research and demand the tests and give yourself permission to help your own child. Note I said help - not cure. |
I’ll speak for my family but after diagnosis we researched supplements heavily. Tested our kid for any deficiencies and digestive issues. Made all the changes including iron, methylfolate, gluten-free, dairy-free, even addressed sleep. The only thing that’s helped the AuDHD profile of our kid has been ABA and stimulants. |
