| How can a travel club field multiple teams when only one coach actually holds a license? It appears that the club lists the only licensed coach as the "Head Coach" and all of the other coaches are listed as "Assistant Coaches." The Head Coach actually only coaches one team and has nothing to do with the other teams -- he never attends their practices or games. How can this be compliant with US Youth Soccer requirements? |
| is it required? you are the one who agreed to join the team. |
Your response just highlights why it is hard to have a legitimate discussion on this forum. |

There are no standards, just what they can trick people into. Look at all the parent coaches at Valor.
Hope to god your club at least runs a background check. |
There are no US Youth Soccer requirements for coaching a travel team. If there were, it would only apply to teams that play in US youth soccer sponsored events. |
oh its me? you are annoyed but don't know the rules? (there are none) you seem to be annoyed you signed up for something and did not investigate who was running the show. |
But Maryland does require a license to coach travel soccer. MSYSA policy states that all head coaches of rostered travel teams in Maryland must hold the following minimum licenses or higher (including USSF E/D/C/B/A): Introduction to Grassroots Module (online) AND Two Grassroots in-person (GRIP) Licenses across any of the four levels (11v11, 9v9, 7v7, 4v4)(note these must be two different licenses) AND One Grassroots online License across any of the four levels (11v11, 9v9, 7v7, 4v4). MSYSA policy further states that only the head coach is required to have a license to coach a travel team. However, they do strongly encourage assistant coaches to pursue coaching education. But what is the definition of a Head Coach? Is it of the entire club or a team? In general, Maryland travel soccer clubs are transparent about the licenses held by their coaches. But not all. |

The value of said license, like in most profressions, also is debateable. Unfortunately, some coaches get thoes but you would wonder whether they ever were coached how to coach because many don't change their approaches etc. I'm not saying there is no value, but I've seen plenty of coaches with no license or the lowest 1-2 levels of licenses better at coaching than those with higher levels of coaching.
There may also be coaches in process of getting certified while they are taking on a team for the first time as the head coach. |
Agreed. However, there is a good reason why the top travel soccer clubs in the DMV highlight the license status of their coaches. But a club with 150+ players and only one coach with a license? Really? |
| Out the club |
It is not hard to figure out. There are very few boys' travel soccer clubs in the DMV that are registered in Maryland. |
Pay to play system. Literally the owner of a newish club in Leesburg is unlicensed and also runs a few of the teams in his club. Then we wonder why US youth soccer stinks. |
