Hunter Test + Contract Timing

Newly moved to NYC with a 6th grader who both applied to a bunch of private schools - pretty much everybody decent who had openings for 7th grade - and took the Hunter test (and felt pretty good about it).
This presents a bit of a conundrum, because most schools appear to require a response by March 3rd - assuming you aren't waitlisted - while Hunter results come out mid-month (website currently says March 14th). Has anybody ever dealt with this situation before? Are schools receptive to being told "you're our first choice unless my kid gets into Hunter" and potentially willing to hold off on requiring a contract for 2 weeks in that situation? |

| Absolutely not. You have to commit to a year of tuition. But you save a lot if you eventually get into Hunter. |

Top privates will likely give you no room here, as they have plenty of interested families in line next. Why would they extend this grace and lose out on other parents that have already opted into another school by then? The best course of action is to pay the deposit and give it up if your DC does not attend. Some plans also offer tuition insurance if you decide to withdraw even later (contacts may require payment in full agreement a certain date) |

| Thanks, that’s disappointing but it makes sense - certainly a lost deposit is NBD compared to 6 years’ tuition. |
