My DS was waitlisted for both the Poolesville HS SMCS and Global Ecology magnet programs. Given that approximately 1000 students applied and there are currently 100 students in each of the three wait pools (according to PHS email), what are the realistic chances of him being selected from either wait pool?
Is there a typically noticeable movement within the PHS SMCS and GE wait pools in Spring/Summer? |
GE does move. SMCS is smaller so less movement but they have taken kids off the waitlist in previous years. |
There is usually some movement in the Poolesville GE program because it’s the furthest away and some kids get accepted to other programs.
You can call them in early February and see how things are looking. |
This is my experience 3 years ago with my child and the stories that were told to her by her friends and their families. Smcs has VERY limited movement, they over invite kids( typically 70-75 kids) and 60 or so will accept. So movement is at minimal from the waitpool. Maybe 1 or 2 from the waitlist.
For global there is a lot of movement. The first wave of acceptances were today, second wave of acceptances will happen in probably 1 month after they have reviewed the rejections from the first wave. The third wave is approximately 1 month after the second wave. Beyond that there is not much movement. Obviously the secod wave of acceptance will be greater than the third wave of acceptances. Global receives a good amount of rejections bc people from all over the county apply just to “see” if they get accepted. But many probably will not go because of the logistics to get to Poolesville. If a student is coming from Silver Spring, his bus ride might be 1.5-2 hours long! That would deter most kids. |

Based on what I'm hearing from the PHS community, it seems like Global has been getting traction in the last years due to its breadth of curriculum, relatively less pressure and better chances to pursue much more extra curriculars / interests. Couple of DC's friends who got placed into SMCS and GE, are considering GE over SMCS. And in recent years, it seems the kids called from wait pool have been seeing a dip in GE. Despite that, like one of the PP mentioned, there are pretty good chances that there will be good numbers called from wait pool. |
Is this true that they offer more than actual seats ? In that case, it seems unfair for students on waitlist. |
A few years ago, my daughter applied to all three programs and was invited to all three houses. She chose her program and that freed up a spot in the other two. I won't pretend that I know the best way the waitlists should be handled, but I'll leave it in the hands of those who do the planning annually. I don't think there is anything unfair about the process... or the waitlist. |
Well then what is he purpose of the wait pool ? It technically is supposed to be used when you have more applicants than actual available seats. And BTW what has it really got to do with your daughter who got in 3 houses and generously accepted 1 and freed 2 spots ? |
PP here - correction Well then what is he purpose of the wait pool ? It technically is supposed to be used when you have more qualifying applicants than actual available seats. And BTW what has it really got to do with your daughter who got in 3 houses and generously accepted 1 and freed 2 spots ? |
My child was offered a spot in the Poolesville Global program in early March a few years ago.
She was offered an accepted a spot in a different program that's much closer to home & took that one. Currently a junior & happy with her choice. |
Second wave of results for GE came in today and my son is invited to GE, my son was invited to SMCS and waitlisted to GE in the first wave. Since he already decided to join SMCS, we are freeing up the GE spot now. |
PP : where did you get it ? on your email ? Does anyone else got it ? |
What is the deadline for acceptance in the letter? For the second wave? |
Has anyone else received acceptance from being in the waitpool for one of the Poolesville programs? |
