Bassett Hound Breeder

I’ve been waiting for a rescue for awhile but now I’m looking into breeders.

Anyone know if a good Bassett breeder which isn’t an Amish puppy mill?

I think in 20 yrs I've only ever seen one Bassett Hound. I don't think there's going to be a lot of breeders. Have you run searches?

The issue you may have is that many ethical breeders have stopped breeding breeds that are very prone to many significant health issues. I think Basset Hounds are adorable--but look at them. That body type is not healthy. It is not ethical to intentionally breed a dog that is likely to have so many painful health issues.

Look at breeders in NC. You will "LOVE" having a basset hound. Know the difference between American and European.

Look up the AKC for Basset hounds in your region and send them an email asking if they have a list of reputable breeders. Don’t go to the AKC marketplace it’s not the same thing at all.

The AKC isn’t ethical so not sure how they would recommend an ethical breeder.

Check the southern shelters if you are serious about rescuing.they get hounds of all kinds, even occasionally Bassetts. Sometimes you can arrange transportation.

Smelly, shedding, permanently sad looking, surly personalities. Yuck.

Thanks! Looking in the south. Appreciate the help.

Weird comment about how they are yuck. Bizarre. It’s a hound dog.

Why wouldn't you go to the official breed club? Still no guarantee of a great breeder, but it's a start.

They get up to 90 pounds op.

There are facebook groups for this, if you are on there. Search "Fact or Fiction: Uncensored opinions of breeders" and state you are looking for a basset. Someone will have good references and they are VERY thorough looking for health testing and such.

We don’t have a basset hound, but I found our breeder on Good Dog. I think it’s a pretty helpful website and allows you to compare different breeders.

If you duct tape two of them together. Basset should be 40-60lbs. Not 90.

Re rescues, have you applied to BROOD? They have a pretty constant supply of rescued Bassets and are a very well run smallish rescue with a lot of breed expertise. Only three are listed as available at the moment but the flow of dogs into rescue has been steady and I would follow them and get an application on file if you haven't already.
