please share any experiences (good or bad) skiing in Chile, specifically at Valle Nevado - for reference, DH and teenage DC (both take Spanish in school) are comfortable skiing Alta and Snowbird blacks.
Looking for hotel recommendations, best time to go (july vs august), transportation options, any other tips - thank you ! |
If you or they are on facebook I would join the Ikon Pass group and ask your question there since Valle Nevado is on the pass, and that group tends to have some well traveled skiers in it. |
Stayed at Puerta del Sol about five years ago. Highly recommend getting transport from the airport from the resort directly. It's a huge elevation shift and you may have to change snow tires, deal with intense window fogging, plus there are like 50 switchbacks in an hour and a half of driving. It's not regular driving and worth the cost.
Mid-late August is when a lot of the ski teams go down there to train. There may be a few runs up at the top that are closed for training but you'll still have access to most of the mountain and it's pretty cool to sit at breakfast next to Olympians. The food is pretty mid, it's definitely not amazing, but it's resort food. Plenty of families with older kids go down from the States at the time too, especially competitive racers. That said the blacks aren't crazy and if you aren't comfortable you'll still be ok, too. It is an entirely self-contained village though and no where to go so it may get repetitive after a few days. |
