My 15 year old had barely started puberty at his 15 year check up a few months ago. At 14 there has been no sign. At 15 just starting. A bone scan showed his bone age to be an estimated 24 months behind. Diagnosed with constitutional growth delay.
Still very little sign of height growth and he still has a baby face and tiny hands and feet. Both parents are very tall and kid should end up about 6’3” if based on parental height alone. However there is some evidence of late growth in men on the sides of both parents as well as the bone scan evidence. What was your experience? When did your kid catch up? |
Still grew in college. Senior of HS -end of it before they were mostly grown, but added a couple of inches in college.
Neither really started growing until after they turned 16. Same diagnosis as your kid. |
“Just starting” is good! Things will pretty come quickly after this.
Mine wasn’t exactly constitution delay bc he started just shy of 14. But he did have an 18 month bone delay. While he reached his full height around 19, at 21 he’s still filling out. |
We are a family of late bloomers.
DD started her period at almost 15 DS looked like a MSer until 16. His bone age was around 18mo to 24mo behind. He didn't "shoot up", instead, he just grew steadily, some years slightly more than others. He was 5'1.25" going into HS. When he graduated, he was 5'10". He's 19 now and 5'11". Maybe has another 1" to grow. Growth has slowed, but DH said he grew till about 21. If I look at his growth chart, his largest growth was between 16 and 17, at a 'whopping' 3". |
Mine wasn’t quite as late as yours. Started his growth spurt at age 14 1/2 - 15, grew fairly quickly after that. At age 14.5 he was 5’3” 94lbs and looked like a child. On his 16th birthday he was 5’11” 130ish lbs and looked like a teen. Currently almost 16 1/2 and he has picked up at least another inch, is around 6’0”. Probably about done growing but not totally sure.
It is frustrating but once they finally start growing it often goes really quickly. Looking at pics of my DS taken one year apart, he didn’t even look like the same person! |
DS was 14.5 when he started showing signs of puberty. He’s 15.5 now. He still looks young compared to many of his peers but he’s grown about four inches in a year and his voice is changing. He feels better now that he doesn’t look like a sixth grader anymore. |
My DS was 5 foot flat at 13. Started puberty at 14 (bone scan shoes he was 6-12 months behind). He’s 5’6’’ at 14.5 and hasn’t gotten broad or filled out yet (still 105 lbs). Endocrinologist thinks he will reach 5’10’’ at a minimum. He was just slow and like another pp said, once he started growing, he really took off. |
My DS’s bone age was 18mos behind and he started growing right around his 15th birthday….so probably soon for yours? Then my DS grew really quickly (4-5 inches/yr for 2 years in a row). |
DS started really growing at 16.5. Now is 18.5 and 6’5.” Was 6’4” this summer and will likely grow a bit more if I had to guess. Still has a baby face! |
But how tall was he when he “started growing” at 16.5? I’m guessing not 5’2 like most prepubertal teen boys. |
My son was in early Tanner stage 2 at 13 and his growth definitely took off probably around 13.5. He's 14.5 now and I bet he's grown 6" since 13. |
My middle school daughter is 5’7” and there are very few boys taller than her. The boys don’t get taller than a lot of the girls until high school. |
My DH is 6’4” and says most of his growth was in college. |
He was no taller than 5’8.” |
He didn't matriculate at 3'2. |
