School uniforms

Anonymous
Has MCPS ever had school uniforms, let's say in the last decade or two decades? If they had them, why don't they now? Were they mandatory? Or if they've never had them, what needs to be done to get school uniforms? And no not talking about those ubiquitous gray sweatpant and sweatshirt worn by HS teens, or shorts or leggings and t-shirt in MS.

No, becuase school uniforms are actually pretty uncommon for public schools.

Except for mandated PE uniforms (80s and 90s), they never had school uniforms.

No, I've never seen uniforms in MCPS, nor do I think we're likely to implement them. If you want uniforms, go private.

Not in low income city districts.

Uniforms in public schools are for poor urban kids. MCPS parents wouldn’t want anything those kids have!

I am from Asia. All public & private schools have their own uniforms and pins/patches representing schools. Everyone wear same shoes and no makeup/hair coloring is allowed. I wear skirts all years long, and we have long sleeves uniforms and short sleeves uniforms. I kind of like it growing up because you don't have to worry about what to wear. Unlike here, kids can wear pajamas or whatever they want to school. Many kids go to public library to do homework or self study after school.

Can you describe the causal link that you see between uniforms and going to the public library? Just explain it in small words for us dumb Americans please.

No they don't. They can be cost effective and less would buy fast fashion. Better yet if uniforms could be bought from sensible soured materials on a mass scale.

I have a kid who doesn’t care about brands so it’s more expensive if you have to buy through specific stores. If you don’t like how your kid dresses do something about it.

One reason MCPS will never adopt them.

That said, I think all of PG Co wears them and the entire district is not inner city or low income.

You can create a uniform for your kid if you’re worried about what they wear, but if your concern is what other people’s kids are wearing, you are out of luck.
