Can someone tell me if singapore math grade 5 equivalent to US math level grade 6 or lower/higher? I am confused. |
I'd give you an up and down yes. Scope and sequence are a little different between Singapore and US programs, and between the different flavors of Singapore math and each other, but 6th grade Singapore should generally lead to prealgebra in 7th and algebra in 8th, whereas 6th grade "regular" math in the US targets algebra in 9th grade for the average student.

A sixth grade kid here would need a fifth grade Singapore book. American students are worse than the kids there. |
My kid switched from FCPS advanced math in 4th (theoretically most of the way or maybe even all the way through fifth grade math) to a version of the Singapore curriculum in 5th. Kid was about half a year ahead after being a full year ahead of the Virginia standards. Because there's a big jump in learning the Singapore math way of doing things, kid struggled at first but once that was mastered has been a little bored. I don't think any reasonably bright American student wouldn't be able to easily catch up, especially if they are on even a basic gifted track. |
Its difficult to compare math as actually taught in Singapore with math here. The sequencing is very different. |
