FIL said doing an 11hr layover as a grown man was difficult. I’ve never had more than an hour layover and I have only flown direct since having children. One teenager and two elementary aged
Kids. |
Any length. If it's going on 8 hours plus, id get a hotel even for just day use. |
My teens had never been on a layover in their lives. This summer we went to Hawaii and a 90 minute layover turned into most of the day and then a hotel stay. It wasn’t fun. |
This. Though with kids I always try to get between 2-4 hours. 6 is my max. The longer layover gives time to use the bathrooms, eat, and enough cushion to transfer if first plane is late. 11 hours wouldn’t be my first option, but I’d unavoidable I’d consider if there is an option for a hotel. |

Use "Day Use" + "Resort Pass" apps to book something. But, layovers are terrible. Three hours would be my max. Where are you going that would require such a long layover? |
My spouse is an airline retiree and we still have the ability to fly (essentially) free on standby. The tradeoff is that we can get stuck for hours at the hub connecting airport. Is it ideal? Of course not. But it's doable, even with young kids. There have been at least 2 times we had a layover of 10-12 hours. |
I have no limit, including with kids, sometimes you can't do much about it due to limited flights. If needed you can get a hotel room. Several times, in other countries, I have had 5+ hour layovers and have taken tours directly from the airport. It made the time go quickly! |
It depends on the layover and the airport. For some cities, I'd like a long layover so I can leave the airport and visit someplace I maybe wouldn't normally visit or wouldn't bother with a separate trip to that place. |
Some airports even sponsor tours. I’ve had delightful tours in several Asian airports for free (just tip the guide).
I specifically do long layovers sometimes, and get a room at the airport, even with kids. It’s super easy with mine, not sure what the big problem is. I relax screen time rules and order room service while we chill. Better than late night landings. |
I would do it if the tickets were free like this, but otherwise, I hate layovers. |
We never do layovers. |
The majority of the world is only reached via layovers. |
How is that possible? Have you never gone anywhere that isn't a direct flight? Do you just not fly much? We have done layovers with kids of all ages and they are really no big deal. Longest we every had was 11 hrs. For that one we got a day use hotel. |
Yeah I mean DC has a lot of access to direct flights but there are still plenty of places that need some kind of layover, including major cities in South America, Asia, Australia, and even some in Europe. Heck there are plenty of small places in the US that require a layover from DC. I am confused by never having one period. |
