Transfer from FCPS to LCPS

Anonymous
We will be moving over the summer, and our child will go from 6th grade in FCPS to 7th grade in LCPS. Next month, their FCPS elementary school is doing orientations and class selection/registration activities (for the middle school they won't be going to.)

Should I contact their new (middle) school and register them now? I don't want them to miss out on class registration for next year.

Any other experiences or things I should know about the transfer process?

You can't register in LCPS if you don't live there yet.

LOL! You need to move first. But don’t worry, they won’t miss out on getting the classes they want.

We already bought the house so we could register, but want to finish the school year in FCPS.

No school is doing academic schedule planning for next year. That starts in late May/early June and continues throughout the summer.

We still live in Fairfax county and will stay until the end of the school year.

I ask because we received a welcome email from the middle school that says course selections are due Feb 10th. I don't want my kid missing out on course selection at their new middle school if LCPS does course selection this early as well.

Actually, I have a middle schooler in LCPS, and they pick their courses for the following academic year around February.

A school is not going to let your child select courses when they are not enrolled. You believe you will be moving there, but that's not a guarantee. Schools can't keep places for hypothetical students. Course selection does begin now, but it continues all spring AND summer, so your kiddo will be okay enrolling when you change residency.
