Seton Hall or Villanova

Anonymous
Has anyone visited both, and how do they compare? Looking for thoughts on how the two Catholic-based schools compare it is for an OOS student DMV. Not interested in Georgetown. How do those two compare such as is either more tight-knit, the academics, sports and activities, and dorms?

They really don't compare. Villanova is several tiers higher. The only reason not to choose it over Seton Hall is if you don't get in or can't afford it.

Villanova and Seton Hall are not peers in anyway, except perhaps for basketball. Villanova is several times more selective/ more national in scope. Seton Hall is a nice regional university. I believe (though my info may be out of date) that Seton Hall has many day students.

Does Seton Hall offer good merit scholarships?

Night and day. Fairfield U is perhaps in between.

I can't find a current Common Data Set, but per College Navigator, Seton Hall offers aid to 100% of students. That has got to involve merit discounts. https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=seton+hall&s=all&id=186584#finaid

Average aid 33k

About a third of students are also Pell recipients, which is quite high

Of Catholic schools, my DS got accepted by all Catholic schools he applied to so far:
- Marquette
- Dayton
- Seton Hall
- Catholic
- Xavier

All of these schools offered anywhere from $25k - $37k in merit aid.

Many of them were applied to as safety schools because they waived application fees.

He is still awaiting to hear from Villanova (which is a reach)

I agree w/ those responses above that Villanova is not in the same league as Seton Hall. Not saying Seton Hall is not a good school, but it is just not in the same category as Villanova.

Visited Villanova.

Nice campus and location. More competitive for admissions versus Seton Hall, so keep that in mind.

Good to know, definitely keeping it in mind. I’ve been around a lot of the greater Philly area, just haven’t visited the Villanova campus.

OP here, this is what I read on another site. Definitely not wanting to go OOS for that, so thank you for confirming.

What they said!

They are completely different institutions. Seton Hall draws a lot of kids from the surrounding area -- which is Newark, NJ.

In addition to the Catholic schools already mentioned, I'd encourage you to check out St. Joe's and Scranton. Very nice colleges that are generous with merit aid.

It’s also right on the border of Newark. If you don’t grasp what that means, you should look into it.
