Is there something addictive in Ensure or Boost?

My mother seems to be addicted to these drinks and becomes angry if she doesn’t have at least two a day.

I want to have a conversation with her doctor about her consumption of these supplements. She ate 3 normal sized, very well-balanced meals a day, plus healthy snacks the last two weeks so we didn’t buy her any Boost or Ensure until she threw a tantrum two days ago.

Maybe she just likes it and wants something familiar after being out of routine for a couple of weeks. There’s zero chance I would mess with this.

Older people like to eat the same thing every day. Why would you deny her ensure? It's not crack.

She enjoys it and likes the routine of drinking it. Why deny her?

I think a lot of us on here would be thrilled to know their parents would drink
2 a day! I’m always worried about calorie/liquid intake.

They are sweet.

If she’s able to access more than two a day, she drops at least one meal. There was a point that she only consumed these drinks. She developed bowel issues that required hospitalization and lost 48 lbs. It took months to wean her down to only two and reestablish eating a meal’s worth of solids. All of her meals are cooked for her.

She was never told by any doctor that she needs these drinks. She saw an ad and started asking for them.

How old is she and what other health problems does she have? If she's 80s/90s, why are you fighting this battle. Let her enjoy the time she has.

Is she trying to diet?

My gma in law refused a bite of ice cream in her last week of life because "it will make me fat"

My late mom who died of congestive heart failure was told to limit her ensures to one a day. Something to do with taking Coumadin/a blood thinner.

My mom was obsessed with her weight - always thin and honestly, frail - and ended up being terrified of losing too much weight so she drank Ensures.

It’s baby formula for adults.

Quoting myself/PP

Contraindications: For those taking blood-thinning drugs like Warfarin, it’s best to avoid drinking nutritional shakes, as most of them pack more than 20% of the recommended daily amount for Vitamin

Also my mom had a weird sensibility about most foods and even medicines and boost/ensure drinks: if one is helpful, an excessive amount will be curative!

These drinks need to stop if they doctor doesn't recommend them for her. The sugar content is very high.

How old is your mother? I remember my grandmother eating something I felt was gross (a spoonful of margarine) and she told me, "I'm 87 years old, I can eat whatever I damn-well please"
