If your dog ate a poopy diaper.....Mine did. Wondering what the consequences are.

My dog loves to get in the trash. He found a poopy diaper in one (I so knew better!) and ate part of it. DH had come home to see it shredded all over the bathroom/bedroom. The dog appears to still be pooping it out. He's having a hard time getting it out and is walking around goofy because of it. He hasn't thrown up and appears to be fine other than trying to pass it.

If you have experienced this, could you advise if everything turned out fine? Is there anything else I should be concerned about?

Just to note, my dog is around the 20-21 pound mark and is going on 4.

I think it really depends on the dog, friends of ours have a dog that can eat ANYTHING and be fine. Whole fish, chocolates in their wrappers, moldy bread, a whole container of snosages including the lid of the container, etc. He once apparently ate 3 or 4 plastic shopping bags because they were hanging out of his butt every time he pooped, he got them out after a few days. On the other hand I have heard of dogs eating very small things and having to have surgery to remove them. I would call our vet; if your dog is in distress then you can call an emergency vet 800# I think they charge around $50-75 for the call.

I would probably call the vet only because those absorbent beads tend to swell up really badly and I don't know if they are dangerous or not. But eating feces in general? Dogs do it all the time. I wouldn't worry about that part.

Yeah, I never knew that, until a friend explained the origin of the expression, "a shit-eating grin"!!

The poop is no problem but the absorbent masterial could be a real issue. If she doesn't poop or seems to have difficulty/discomfort, I would call right away.

There's an ER vet in Rockville that's open all night, and they are great.

Vet here. The gel in diapers is non-toxic and the PPs are correct that eating poo is a non-issue. But, if your dog ingested large enough pieces of the diaper or enough of the gel crystals, that could cause a foreign body obstruction and necessitate surgery (or removal via endoscopy if possible). If your dog is doing okay, then feed him a couple pieces of whole wheat bread (more fiber than white) every 4-6 hours. Take him for walks and see if you can get him pooping. If he starts vomiting, won't eat, has bloody diarrhea, is really straining to defecate, or becomes very lethargic, painful (hunching up, whining, crying, reluctant to move, etc), then take him to the vet. If you're in MD, MEAC is the emergency clinic in Rockville and there is an excellent ER up in Gaithersburg as well at VRA. Good luck!

00:35 again. I forgot to write that if the diaper had a fair amount of desitin, or other cream containing zinc oxide, then he should be seen sooner rather than later since zinc oxide ingestion can cause anemia in dogs.

See, now why can't this happen more often around here? Someone writes in a question about a possibly sick dog and an actual vet answers with a sane and logical assessment. Truly novel.

I know! I was waiting, however, for someone to slam the vet for giving out advice on the net 'without truly knowing' her patient like someone did to a dietitian on the food forum.

Personally, I think it's great. People can research more at will or go into a professional to get more information, but honestly the advice like the vet above gave is really nice and helpful, IMO. (And the dietitian's too).

Yes; fantastic!

OP here. Doggie appears to be doing fine. None of the severe issues PP mentioned. Good to know about the bread too!

Thank you all for your comments!!

You need to take her to a vet anyway and figure out a payment plan after the fact. Otherwise, she's suffering needlessly. Just go.

call the vet. I don't understand people like this. If this was your child, would you go online to an anonymous forum where anyone could give you awful advice? No, you'd call the ped. Just call the vet. I could lie right now and say I"m a vet and your dog will be fine with some Pepto. And you'd believe me? I have a lab who gets into EVERYTHING. My vet is on speed dial and 9 times out of 10 she tells me what to do over the phone and what I should look out for. JUST CALL.
