I just became a teacher at a middle school and my class size is 53. I think that this is a crazy amount. I did some research and Maryland does not have a class limit requirement. I do not have enough desk, books or patience for 53 students. I have complained and asked for an extra hand, materials, reduced class size, etc and all they say is that they are working on it and to be patient. If a teacher or a parent that knows of how many students are in the class, please let me know. I need to know if this is normal and what to expect. It’s stressing me. |
Welcome to the zoo. |
It’s not possible to have 53 students in one class. |
I had a friend who taught in TX in similarly sized classes. They always told teachers it was temporary, be patient, etc. Lies told to fill the position. |
I would say most classes have between 25-30. But some of the electives get up in the 50s…band, computers, etc. But the teachers hate it and i dont think this many should be in a class |
I know our middle school classes are 20 per class. Like most middle schools they are broken down into teams so that you are with the same students all day. Each team is made up of two classrooms so about 40 per team. |
I went to a public ... 63 students in 6th grade, but that was in the 80's and in the real inner city. |
This is same for us. Mainly a problem in electives |
40 hrs per week then go home and relax. If you succumb to bullying by principals to rob you of your time and money their will be no end to their mismanagement. If they want you to work 2 jobs they need to pay us for 2 jobs. Further, appraisals are bs. They make up the info many times like they request us to make up passing grades for students. I treating things is when they make up the details of our paperwork it always sounds negative but they demand that we fraud data to make up data on violent students that make their time seem positive to pass a failtard. |
That’s crazy. Technically, Virginia has a maximum but it’s been my observation that many (most?) divisions play games with the numbers to meet State Code. They’ll do things like add in “specials” teachers or a para assigned to just one or a few students to get their numbers down. Our local board got tired of it and several years ago asked for a report, usually in October, of actual classroom roster counts. They don’t publish it but must do enough wrangling behind the scenes to get the numbers down to 30-35 for middle school core classes. That’s still way too many in my opinion. I’m sorry, OP, I doubt your situation will improve at this point in the school year. And we wonder why teachers are leaving in droves and few want to give it a go. |
Our Loudoun MS is probably 25-32. Less popular elective classes are smaller. Band is bigger and maybe chorus, but it has more sections so I’m not sure. |
Pre-algebra 18-21
Honors algebra 23-25 |
Wow 53 is literally insane. I think I would have laughed and asked where the other teacher(s) are. Serious question. Or maybe you’re supposed to have 5 1:1 aides in the class so they figure that’s enough adults in the room for that many kids? |
APS classes are generally 25 or so. I think reading for English had close to 30. Looking et private for high school. |
My middle schooler has 30-40 per class. MCPS. |
