Hello. I am looking for a nursing home for my grandmother. She has advanced Alzheimer’s .
My parents were taking care of her at home but as her needs grow, it is no longer feasible. We are looking for a nursing home that accepts Virginia Medicaid/medicare. Home can be anywhere in DMV or Virginia Beach. Do you know of a good facility? Thank you |
Medicare is only available after a three day qualifying hospital stay. Does not work for direct admit. Do you have Medicaid already? |
Most places have Medicaid accommodations.
The best way in is to come on Medicare and then convert to Medicaid. This ordinarily requires a prior hospital stay. Recommendations are a good way to get leads but you need to tour recommended places to see how they are today. Staff, management, ownership all change and that impacts the care. Do not be fooled by decor. Look in on patients. Smell the place. Ask if you can try the food. Ideally, try to visit someone already there at off hours. |
Thanks you, my grandmother already has Medicaid and Medicare. We are now looking for a good nursing home with memory care for her.

That’s really good news. I don’t have recommendations but hopefully someone here will post. |
The next time she falls or has an accident, take her to the hospital and once she’s there tell them you cannot care for her at home. They will find you a spot. |
Yes, but if you’re not up to speed on the options and the conditions at various places, that “spot” will be at the place most convenient to their getting the file off their desk, not necessarily what you would pick. You need to be in a position to advocate. |
She has Medicaid for LTC? That is a specific program. |
Agree. I had no options with our dad though the place chosen worked out the best for our mom to be able to visit in all seasons. For our mom, we got lucky as there was an opening in the memory care unit in the nonprofit CCRC. The staff where our dad resided was great, though it was clear that it was run by a corporation (mainly they stinted on supplies, including for patient care), where the supplies were abundant for our mom. In fact, staff working at the corporations would try to move over to the nonprofit as it was simply a more pleasant work environment. |
