Of the NOVA publics, of course.
Any predictions for the Spring 2025 boys season? |
| I believe Wakefield HS (Arlington) has had the top boys program in recent years. Not sure about the rest. The old, traditional crew programs like Alexandria City (former TC/GW) and W-L are still humming along, but not sure about talent there. |
| Why |
Langley HS won A LOT of crew championship. Wakefield HS won a few, but WF is not at the same level as Langley or Mclean HS. When it comes to crew, money matters, and Langley/McLean pyramid has a lot. |
I think PPs are referring to the Varsity 8 championship boats specifically. I’m certain the Arlington high schools and the FCPS high schools have dozens of championship boats over the past decade. All these teams have anywhere between 100 to 150 members. I saw in the news that W-L left its home of almost 80 years in Georgetown since it outgrew the boathouse there. |
| ^Meant to write the other schools have had dozens of other championship boats over the past decade. |
Yes; interested in the Varsity 8 boys championships for NOVA HS |
|
Wakefield has won the Virginia state championship on the girls side the last few years.
The best FCPS girls program is probably Woodson. |
I think Wakefield for the Boys Varsity 8 this year. |
How is that possible? According to Langley crew: https://www.langleycrew.com/ 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024 State Champions https://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/sports/langley-high-school-crew-rows-into-its-30th-season/article_1c04a5b4-cf35-11ed-8da3-af8d17fb899f.html Langley crew has captured state championships every year since 2012 |
Are those Langley championships for the varsity 8 boats? According to the Wakefield Crew Boosters website “Wakefield has built a legacy of success. In 2024, the girls first varsity 8 won the state championships for the 4th year in a row,” |
|
The 2019 State Girls Champion Varsity 8 boat was from W-L HS.
So Langley was not the state varsity 8 winner from at least 2019 through 2024 on the girls side. |
I think the term “state champion” is being used if any boat (1V/2V/3V/novice, boys or girls) wins gold. I don’t know if they row 4s or singles. Langley has gotten a gold medal in at least one VASRA event every year since 2012, which is awesome. I’m not sure how many of those boats were varsity 8s. |
Wakefield girls and West Springfield boys won the points trophy for Virginia states last year, which is what officially counts as winning states. https://x.com/vasra_srrp/status/1790342669115293900?s=46&t=jVPOcssAh0Bg6uBLVRkyoA Those were also the two programs that had their top 8 boat win the grand final. https://www.vasra.org/ Langley’s only wins were in the 4th 8 boats. Which is the equivalent of having your freshman team win and claiming that you were state champs. |
| Wakefield boys 1v8 won state in 2022 for the first time in years (or ever?). But I think Wilson (DC) has done even better in recent years. |
