Be in college but returning home for breaks and hopefully to work eventually.
What area within an hour or two would you choose? We live in Manhattan now and have a small house in rhinebeck that we’d likely sell to help finance a new place. Schools don’t matter at this stage so ideally a place that doesn’t have insane taxes. But close enough that we can find a train to take into the city if needed. Someplace near water appeals to me. We considered the hamptons but it’s far too pricey for us, and far anyway. Also greenport but I know little about it. Anything in CT? Ideas? |
Where are your kids going to college? |
Far but both say they plan to come back to NY. One is very likely to, the other we are not as sure about. |
I wouldn't do this. They're going "far" (who the hell knows if that means Buffalo or Berlin?) but want to come back to NY. Then they can stay with friends or relatives. It's not right to ask parents to put their lives on hold once their kids have left for college for the couple months they want to spend in NY. Go live wherever you want to live. Live your life. Keep in mind your kids may change their minds - people change a lot as they go through college. |
Sorry, what? *We* want to live in and around NY. We are only semi retired, for one, and we love NY. We just want more space. One dc is in college already so we know what ‘far’ means, and it is a place where he cannot work after college so he will come back to NY almost certainly which is the center of the job market for what he wants to do. |
Westchester
Darien New Canaan Bedford |
What’s your housing budget and what’s your total net worth? |
Westport - be close to MetroNorth |
I really like Bronxville, but it not cheap. There are towns on the water that are nice. You may want to drive up along the Hudson and see if any of the towns look good to you. Nyack is nice, but it’s the other side of the Hudson and not good for train access. Haverstraw is up and coming, but might be too downscale for you. Piermont is lovely, but small. |
I don't know that they'll ever be returning, OP. They'll have to go where work is. My father left Asia for Europe, and I left Europe for the US. My cousins have worked on every continent except Antarctica.
So move somewhere that you absolutely love. Take your time finding the place. Your kids will come to you from wherever they are. |
(but hopefully near an airport!) |
Stamford seems nice with lowish taxes and easy for your kids to visit if they land in NYC after college. |
There are all kinds of lovely places on the water that are convenient but slightly too far for a daily commute. Black Rock in Bridgeport, CT on the Sound for instance. But why wouldn’t you just move to the Rhinebeck house full time? It has the Amtrak station to the city right there… |
Stamford is a bit blue collar and rough around the edges. |
If you are not too set on being on the water, look into croton on Hudson, warpping falls.
For something more posh look into Katonah and Bedford hills. I live here and it’s wonderful but when I retire I will do east hampton. |
