Putting a deposit down for housing, months before getting accepted?

Anonymous
Is anyone doing this?
Texas at Austin just sent an email about this---$50 (non refundable) to secure a space on a housing list. EA Acceptances are not out until mid January.
Do other schools do this? Should we pay the money?
Anonymous
Yes ! Do it.

I would absolutely pay right now!

I would do it, too!

I’m a 90s Texas-Ex and we had to do this back in the day as well.
If you want on-campus housing then do it.
But there’s lots of nice housing just off campus in west campus too on the other side of The Drag.

If you have a girl, look at SRD or Hardin House.

NP but that sounds ridiculous. Why isn't an enormous university system capable of having acceptances, and then students decide if they are going there, and then start their lists? It's 2024. It's all on computers (and maybe a little AI). This should be easy for them.

For $50, I would do it.

I believe University of Minnesota does this.

Running a business comes first, actual education is somewhere in the middle.

No, I waited until the absolute last minute. I’ve paid $250 and $800, so $50 is very cheap.

because it's revenue for them. Pay it and do a chargeback if your kid doesn't get in

Are you prepared to experience homelessness ?

Heck, this is such a good deal that I'm sending in $50 and I didn't even apply to UT or to any other school in Texas.

$50 is a drop in the bucket!

$50 for an opportunity to possibly deal with less headache when you will feel like you are trying to put up a tent in a hurricane?
Please do it.
