At what point do you go to the doctor?

My three year old has been vomiting since about 9pm last night. She doesn't have a fever or diarrhea or any other symptoms. I'm not sure at which point I should take her to the doctor. We've been very lucky with my daughter that she's only been sick like this one other time. What would you do?

I'd call the nurse line immediately.

I'd probably let it ride out a little longer but it never hurts to call. If you call the doctor's office and ask to speak to a nurse they can help you evaluate whether you need to bring your daughter in much better than we can. Good luck - I know how awful it is when your child is sick. You made it though the night (which I think is the worst) - today will be a better day.

My 2yr old started vomiting Friday night. Sunday started the diarreh and continues today. His eyes are oozing too. Oddly there is no fever, but he's not eating and is sleeping alot. We are going to the dr today at 3:30.

Normally I hold out a few days before going to the doctor, I definitly don't call at every fever, sniffle, or vomit, but in this case it has carried on and does not seem to want to let up. There really does not seem like there is much the doc can do other than prescribe antibiotics and the BRAT diet.

I would be worried about dehydration. It doesn't hurt to call and at least set your mind at ease.

She stopped vomiting a few hours ago and now just seems weak and tired from being up all night. Hopefully she'll get rest tonight and be good tomorrow. I'm just not sure sometimes because I think what doctors think is serious enough to warrant a visit is much more than what parents usually think.

Thanks for all the replies.

My daughter just went thru this and had to go to hospital for dehydration. It did not take long either, and that was pumping pedialite into her every 10 mins. If your child seems happy and playful I would not worry, if they are crying and sleepy, lathragic (sp) go to the doc. I would not recommend speaking to a nurse, just call and tell them you need an appointment today. both times my child had problems like this the nurse told me that a child could throw up for days without a problem. Not my child. Good luck..I guess something is going around.

A similar virus went through our family a week ago, so it must be going around. DH spent a day on the couch with stomach cramps, DD threw up the next day, and DS had diarrhea the third day, and none of them got fevers. I dodged the bullet.

I called the pediatrician and a nurse said they don't even let vomiting kids come in because they probably have a virus. She said to take her to the ER. I'm so worried. I've never had to go through it before. I really hope it goes ok.

That is so strange. I took my vomiting son to the ped yesterday (I posted to this thread). They certainly had no problem with me bringing him in. He has a stomach bug and a cold on top of it. If they don't want to see sick kids maybe they should rethink medicine and go into law? The doctor told me what I already knew:

-Make sure he drinks lots of water and stays hydrated. He's good with that.
-Stay away from dairy (except yougurt) and stay away from sugars or foods with high fiber.
-If he starts wheezing bring him back in.
-Let him sleep whenever he wants.

She also gave me containers to collect stool samples so they could determine what's going on with him.

I am NOT a medical professional, but as long as she's not dehydrated or seriously lethargic, I doubt you need to go to the ER. My 5 yo started vomiting Sunday night; then again yesterday afternoon, evening, and this morning. She's tired and doesn't have much appetite (well, except for this morning when she was starving, ate some bread, and promptly threw up), but she's in a pretty good mood, so I'm just trying to keep her comfortable and making sure she drinks a little water or apple juice from time to time. When she feels up to it, I'll give her a popsicle.
