Oct 7 anniversary message from MCPS

Anonymous
What message if any did MCPS send out on the anniversary of Oct 7? Or did they "allow" each school leader to make the call whether to send a message to school families? Can't quite recall, but wasn't there some controversy around MCPS' messaging last year immediately after the attacks?

MCPS has wisely seemingly ceased commenting on geopolitical events as a system, which is a stance I agree with.

Are schools planning to talk about it? Some teachers mention 9/11 (which happened on U.S. soil) and others don't. Did you hear from kid that their teacher/s mentioned attacks + response last year or at anytime during this past year?

Personally I hope that MCPS says nothing. October 7th, and everything that has followed in its wake, is not in their wheelhouse; their job is to educate children from early childhood through secondary school, not comment on world events.

I'm not sure it's fait to judge this year, as it's not yet October 7th.

We got an email from our school. I took me a moment to figure out what they were talking about.

I think it's a little tone deaf to assume that everyone will be in mourning tomorrow. I don't condone the savagery in any way, honestly, I don't even blame Israel for responding. We are immigrants and it's kind of alienating to assume that this event has the same meaning to all of us. I mean, are there similar messages on the anniversaries of earthquakes and tsunamis?

They read this forum, they will plan to send a message or not according to what y'all have to say on this thread. Just kidding

It could be appropriate if ALL events were acknowledged but they aren't. Why do schools send messages for select events?

Haven't received anything yet. It's an extremely sensitive topic. I tell my kids not to talk about it at school.

Keep religion and politics out, MCPs.
Ha!

If they acknowledged ALL world events, there would be a message every day.

Ok so keep all messages out. But did some schools already send messages, as a poster up thread mentioned? didn't see if mcps' weekly update said anything about the anniversary.

+1 absolutely agree

It's been a rough past year for many on many levels

We got an email with resources for kids and option to go to counseling if they are struggling. I thought it was appropriate.

While MCPS doesn’t need to comment on the politics of the war in Gaza, I do think it’s appropriate to acknowledge that many students and staff have been affected because of friends and family members that have been directly impacted by the war.

I had no clue what this was about - figured it was a school shooting I missed. Attack on Isreal? Why the heck would MCPS say anything? That's a totally different country that has nothing to do with us. Wtf.
