Looking for DR/practice who takes insurance for Dyslexia testing

Anonymous
Hi, I was wondering here if anyone might be able to help me. My DD20 is at college. She was diagnosed with inattentive ADD as a child. She would like to be tested for dyslexia (long story, but we've always wondered if her initial diagnosis was correct.)

We have Care First Blue Choice insurance and dsylexia testing is covered by our insurance plan (I called to confirm this.)

Unfortunately, I cannot find anyone who tests that takes insurance. Does anyone know how to navigate this? Or has had any luck in this area?

We live in Loudoun County.

Thank you!

You'll have to look at the Carefirst website. Run a search for psychologists by distance - that way psychological practices, i.e. psychologists at the same address will pop ip together. You'll have to look at what they have listed as specialities. Last time I looked several years ago, there were some psychologists who do assessment listed. (Many do not take insurance.)

I think that Dyslexia is not considered a medical issue its a LD and therefore is not covered by health insurance. I would check if the insurance would even cover this type of testing.

Good Luck

Neuropsyph testing can be qualified for FSA funds which helps some.

The places that take insurance are the children's hospitals: Children's National, Kennedy Krieger, etc. But I don't think any of them have experience with dyslexia testing because it's so unusual for insurance to cover academic testing.

What does she want the diagnosis for? A diagnosis of ADHD is enough to register with disability services and talk to them about accommodations, which could include accommodations for difficulty/slow reading (audiobooks, etc.) If she wants to do reading tutoring she can, even without an official diagnosis.

Depends on how long ago the testing was done and if any accommodations were used in HS. You can't just pop into college asking for disability accommodations from being diagnosed when you were 6 and not having an IEP in HS.

People who don't read the full post without answering are just awful. If you had read the post without typing out this nonsense, you would have seen that she did check and it is covered. Stop wasting people's time.
