SSN dead coparent

Anonymous
We applied and Ssn just dropped a couple hundred in my account for kid. I don’t have a letter stating what this money is…
Is there a calculator somewhere that can help me identify if this amount is possibly correct? And/or it was a one time thing?
Ex was in arrears a couple grand.
Ex had multiple families and minors.

How old is your kid?

You should be able to access an account with child support to view what is owed and docket info.

Was the direct deposit $255?

This is for survivor benefits with SSN. It came from SSN not child support.

No. It was a lot more.
It was akin to what the child support office original thought he should pay in support based on their view of his assests. It is possible he earned enough. But id like to know if this was a one time payment, and if there will be no future payments or etc…
Maybe I will try to create an ssn online account for kid…

This is a good article on the family maximum. Were you divorced from the co-parent?

Payments usually continue until children are at least 17.

Not sure if children in a different household affect the family maximum, so if the other surviving children start making claims, I am not sure if the benefit for all the deceased's children is reduced. It's a black box. I would try to make an appointment with Social Security if I were you to go through the calculations.

Thank you. It was weird and they didn’t want to tell me amounts .

I think the benefits are capped for the deceased's kids as a group by the family maximum and your child's benefit may go up or down depending on when the other children apply or age out of the system.

If he had three or four children, as children hit adulthood, the remaining minor children might see an increase in their respective benefit until only 2 are minors and they'd both stay steady at 75% of the deceased parent's basic benefit.

If you know the ages of your child's half siblings, I'd be calling and asking Social Security to recalculate any time one of the older sibs aged out

I do and I will. I’m also track the extra year because kid will still be in high school. I’m just trying to understand if a payment should be a couple grand

It should be retroactive to the date of death. Call them.

Call Social Security. You’ll be on hold a while so budget for that time and maybe do a house project while you wait. They’ll look up your child’s account. You can also make an appointment and go in.

How do you not know the amount coming to you if you made the appointment with SS to get survivor's benefits for your child?
They paid the money from the date of the death, and said how much you were going to receive going forward til the kid is 18 or til the end of high school.
Log into the account, make one if you don't have it yet, and there you have your SS and child's ss separately. Choose the child one and print the letter. The letters were also suppose to come to your address at the beginning. Shouldn't be your job to recalculate the money as all the other kids are added. SSA will.
Couple of hundred may be the one time death payment.
