Looking for an Indian cook to come to home

Anonymous
A friend of mine recently fell ill and is unable to cook for her family and elderly parents, so I would love to find someone who can go to her home regularly (eg couple of times a week) and cook in the short term (hopefully a couple of months or less) until she recovers. They live in NoVa. It is essential that the cook is experienced in South Indian (preferably Tamil) food, but it doesn’t have to be exclusively vegetarian. Any suggestions are appreciated! They may consider someone who has a home-based kitchen who offers pick up / delivery, but are not going to order exclusively from restaurants.

What is your budget for this?

I’m not sure what their budget is but since it is temporary and urgent, I don’t think budget is an issue.

I got a quote for $25/ hr for a 3-hr minimum but they’d probably be willing to pay more for someone good.

There are home cooks/caterers who will do this, or who will prepare a set of meals and drop them off. I haven't used them but I see them advertised on facebook groups often. Look for a facebook group that caters to Indians in your area and ask there. Added benefit is that you may get someone recommended by others rather than taking a risk on an unknown.

I know a private chef that books for things like this, but it's about $4000 a week for 3 meals a day, family of 6, ingredients not included. Excellent, though. I suspect that really might be out of the range that you want.

Other than that, there is both homemade food and tiffin service through Sulekha for, e.g., Ashburn:

Hi - would you be able to share the private chef's details? I am interested!

A private chef making a $200k a year salary in this area? I doubt it.

Ask a friend or Indian neighbor to start a meal train. Ask any temple to see if they cater. There are TONS of housewives that will cook a simple tiffin.

Also, Gujarati networks have home made tiffin dabba service in NoVa.
