What makes “groups” of colors work together more or less

I’ve read about color circles and such, but there are clearly categories colors that kind of go together and I don’t know why. Like neons, pastels, and jewel tones. Or kind of muddy colors, or other categories I don’t have words for. Is that tone? How do you find them to use in decorating?

Read about color seasons. It’s usually framed as being for people, but it’s really just about color harmony.

Look at paintings or nature —you’ll see hues that work well together.

One of my favorites is desert plant sage green with sunset lavender and bright pink.

Another example is the blues and yellows from Starry Night.

This! And look at nature (flower beds with yellow and purple flowers, opposites on a color wheel), art and interior decoration magazines or the Instagram pages of interior designers
