Olympics - Women's Breakdancing - anyone watching?

Holy F, these women are incredible and strong AF. I'm blown away - it's art, and incredible strength. Anyone else watching now?

I agree it was super impressive, and fun to watch. Really creative.

I like that it doesn't have the element of preassigned difficulty scores. I think that, combined with the fact that they don't know the music in advance, leads to a lot of the creativity.

Having said that, the thing I've enjoyed watching most this Olympics is the Sport Climbing Combined events. Watching an event where every single athlete falls multiple times and gets back up is impressive. What a study in resilience!

I’m not impressed and don’t think it belongs in the Olympics.

I bet you play pickleball.

Is this a new sport?

The Olympics did include art years ago. How is any different than rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming?

I was looking forward to it and found it awful. I hope it doesn't stick. I thought it was kind of lame and not particularly skillful. I'm far from an expert but watch a lot of competitive dance and pre-professional ballet training and was underwhelmed. Maybe the men will be better tomorrow?

I think it’s the subjectivity of the scoring. I like objectivity - scores, times, accuracy etc. I’m not a fan of the rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming either.

And before I get hit with a list of other Olympic events that have objective scoring (golf, shooting, etc) that people may think belong with other sports, I’m not in charge of who’s in or out, I’m just stating my opinion on breaking.

I think it's awesome and fun. It's not any more arbitrary than regular gymnastics - there are moves, skills, and qualifications.

But by god, my body hurts watching them slam their bones on the floor. One of the finalists was 41 years old!

Good for Japan. The competitors seemed really supportive of each other.

I can understand not enjoying watching something. I don't understand why you think that should be a criteria for what goes in the Olympics. There are definitely sports I don't enjoy watching, but luckily with streaming, I can just watch something else.

Interesting, I did not watch. I at first didn't think it belonged but then I thought what another poster did. That is, it's similar to rhythmic gymnastics (which is not the typical gymnastics in terms of athleticism and strength and difficulty, imo).

I am dying laughing at the Australian woman. Is this a hoax? She got a free trip to Paris to basically roll around on the floor. Well played.

That is not what pp meant. She didn't say i find BD boring so it should not be in the olympics. She said she doesn't think it qualifies at being an Olympic level sport. Two different thought processes.
