Asking for a raise

Asking for a raise in the morning, looking for some advice. For background, I am senior level in a niche field with extensive and hard to replicate experience. I have a competing offer internally and could also very easily make an external move. I absolutely love my team, which is the only thing that makes me question if I should just change roles entirely. My boss and I have known one another since 2016 when he was a customer of mine, I have worked for him (different company for us both) since 2022. He is very straight forward and I expect this entire conversation to last 5 minutes.

My question: Would you overshoot what you hope to receive and expect to negotiate, or would you ask for the number that will make you happy, knowing that your boss is a reasonable and aware of the job creep that has occurred? I’ll be asking in terms of percentage rather than dollar figure and just waffling on the number.

Ask for 10-15 percent more than what you will be happy with getting. That way when if the boss low balls you, you may land close to what you really want.

If boss says no/not right now. Let boss know you want to revisit this in 60 or 90 days.

Another tack would be to frame as a job reclassification due to role change. In some companies that’s necessary to justify raise
