Recruiting for basketball by HS coaches

Anonymous
My son has been approached by a few of coaches at schools (both Catholic and independent) he will be applying to this fall for 9th grade next year. I get the impression that my son is probably in the "nice to have" portion of some coaches' lists, not the "must have" portion of the lists, given coaches seem to be expressing casual interest so far this summer.

Any advice/input/guidance on how all of this works would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

I think you’re likely right about where your kid stands based on what you shared, but I’m sure you realize that your son is in a much better position than 99% of the kids who would like to play for these teams.

I know a dad who was hired as an assistant coach at a WCAC school where they really wanted the son. On the other hand, my son’s coach said “we have a place for your son on the team”, but they didn’t go out of their way to recruit him.

If they approached him, they want him because WCAC’s and most independent schools aren’t even allowed to approach a kid or the kid’s family. The kid or his family have to make the first move.
The coach may talk to the kids AAU coach or some kind of middle man, but they around allowed to go to the kid or the kids family.

Now that the fall school year has started we are getting more incoming. can someone provide insight from their experience on how this process works? Any lessons learned?

This is all very new to us. Any advice most appreciated. Son is in 8th grade looking at a wide range of dmv high schools in terms of basketball rankings.

Honestly just email the coach and start a dialogue. The coaches have their own incentives obviously but most are fairly transparent if you just level with them. But you have to make the first contact.
