Putting children in summer camp at vacation destination?

Anonymous
I never knew this was a thing. Do you enroll your children in camp at your destination location?

No, never, vacations are for spending time together. We have put kids in camp and gotten a hotel room when they were younger as they weren't ready to sleep over or were more comfortable with us close by but that wasn't a vacation.

Not on vacation, but if I travel for work in the summer, they go to camp at the biz travel destination if I can make it work.

I have when the kids were little (a long time ago) They’ve done day camp at Amelia Island Plantation and Watercolor. It was a few hours for a day or two during a week vacation. The kids loved it.

Oh, and we've also done this.

My parents used to send me to various day camps at vacation destinations. It’s horrible being the outsider in a group, while on vacation!

Yeah, that would suck. We’ve done camp at the resorts so all the kids are there on vacation and outsiders.

Are you going to a place for longer than a week and doing 1/2 day camp? I know many people who do this. For many of the parents, they are working here and there and it gives them flexibility to knock out stuff they need to do and then do something later in the day together.

DP but this is a scenario where I would do it. For example, someone I know had a conference at a nice destination out west. They turned it into a month long family trip there where they rented a house etc. Kids did camp for part of the time (while parents worked in regional office or remote) and then they had a week or more of actual vacation together. Also got to explore the area on weekends, evenings etc. Sounded great!

We do about a month long vacation every summer. DS does 1 week of a half day soccer camp and 1 week of a full day outdoors type camp.

No, but I don't find my kids hard to manage. I'm also a SAHM, so its not a shock to me for them to be around me all day on vacation.

I know families who have done this especially when their planning several weeks at a destination (like a family beach house). We also know a family that went on a 2 week vacation to hawaii - one week the kids went to a sleepaway camp in hawaii and adults had a week on their own. Then the family had a week together for a family vacation.

Since you're a SAHM, who not give yourself and the kids a vacation sometime, for a new experience?

Yes. Vacation should be fun, and sometimes that means different things for different cohorts, and people can wear each other out if they never separate.

It's not like vacation is the only time of year we see each other.

I put my kids in camp and then we do a vacation nearby at a B&b. It’s not a “destination” but we have a great time. It is the only kid-free time I get all year.
