Not sure it’s the same thing but my kid and others got a Governors Merit Award based on GPA. No money, — received a certificate and a medal to wear at graduation.

But what do they do when 50% of the class has a perfect UW 4.0?

Ours was the top 4% in terms of GPA, and it was based on weighted GPA, not unweighted.

It's a Maryland State Statutory requirement that all public High Schools in the State award the governor's certificate of merit to the top 5% of each graduating class. Statute doesn't specify how it's calculated, and our MCPS HS did not say how it makes the determination (Weighted v unweighted GPA)

How is this calculated? My son is at PHS with a 4.89 and B in HS. Is he likely to get it?

PHS uses unweighted for this GPA so no.
