Indoor only cat getting fleas?

Anonymous
Cat never goes outside. I found 4 fleas on her and was able to pick them off. I didn’t find any flea dirt so I think I found them quickly. I immediately bathed her twice in dawn soap. She’s on frontline even though she doesn’t go out but I can’t imagine where fleas came from. Any advice?

From what I understand, this is not rare. I assume you don't live in a condo. People can bring in fleas home on their shoes or clothes. Fleas can jump through window screens, if your cat is sitting by an open window. Your cat can pick up fleas at the vet, if they caught a mouse (a whole other problem!), if someone brings a dog to visit, etc. Hopefully Frontline should prevent this from being a problem?

Were they definitely fleas? Only 4 is strange when she's also on Frontline. There are more on her. I'm not sure if you should do another dose of Frontline but dawn soap isn't enough. Your poor cat getting two baths.....

You can also give Capstar.

They can ride in on the cuffs of your jeans and find the cat. Its quite usual. We have an indoor only cat but we keep a box of flea treatments for any time she is going to the vet where she might catch them, or traveling.

Frontline doesn't seem to work for my cat. Maybe try one of the newer products, you have to keep ahead of the resistant parasites.

I use Revolution/Revolution Plus and haven’t had any problems. Mine are indoor, but I don’t want to take any chances.

You can pick up the eggs on your shoes and voila, particularly if you walk in an area where many people walk their dogs.

This is why it’s important to test fecal matter for parasites at well visits as well.

Frontline is known to take over 2 weeks to work and only for about 2 weeks. Use Revolution plus.
