ECNL moving to school year not calendar

This announcement about move to 9/1 seasonal year registration only appears to mean that even at the rec levels August kids who are older for their grade won’t be allowed to play with their grade anymore. So much for all the people who said “this won’t impact rec levels.” Really? What August kid will enter the sport when they are told they can’t play on their school Kindergarten team?

Where did anyone say this wouldn't impact rec levels? What is the cutoff in the state you are specifically complaining about. And currently of you want to include aug in that mix there are 5 months worth of kids with that issue. So again greatly reduced.

But it’s not fair!

Cal South currently has 8/1 registration option which presumably means at rec level. And that’s in a state with 9/1 “cutoff” (which to repeat yet again is not a mandatory enrollment requirement and as such many August born kids in CA do not enroll in Kindergarten right upon turning 5). With 8/1 registration those kids have been able to play rec level with their friends/grade, which is primary entry point for the sport.

Many posters here have claimed that local rec leagues will still allow kids to just play with their grade. This release indicates no.

Even under birth year registration there are rec leagues that do school year not age for their groupings. One specific rec league does not mean that is what every rec league will do.

In California, the majority of Aug. kids go to school on time. By setting the 8/1 cutoff, you put the majority of Aug. kids to play in a lower-grade team. You claim they can play up, but in reality, very few of them can play up. So 8/1 cutoff will cause more kids to misalign their grade team. The logic is very simple. But your intention to make your own kids the oldest in the team is trying so hard to distort the reality.

There is no “on time.” There is an eligibility window, no requirement, and many kids wait. Where is the data that the majority of kids don’t wait? Regardless, I’m speaking of the rec level and not boxing out kids from playing entry level soccer with their classmates. If you are against that concept, that’s callous.

Would VYSA need to come out with something similar for VA clubs to do this?

Would ECNL and/or GA/MLSN follow this transition plan?

Probably not. Their teams usually go from Aug to May (and further depending on playoffs) so breaking up the team for a new one in the spring isn’t feasible

Everyone will follow. It’s the best youth league in the US.
