Spinning off from the sophomore course thread. This year, MCPS is piloting AP English 10 Seminar. It is an AP course that satisfies the English 10 requirement. The following schools piloted it this year:
Clarksburg HS Damascus HS Gaithersburg HS Paint Branch HS Springbrook HS Wheaton HS Can anyone whose kid is taking this course talk about the experience in the course? It is being expanded for the 2024-2025 school year to more schools so would be helpful to get feedback on how the pilot year went. |
| My student took it and it is probably his most interesting class. I liked the idea of more rigor for them in English. I don’t know if that worked but he did more writing than previous years. He took the AP test but no results yet of course. |
| Overly complicated directions and format of class. No literature whatsoever. It's not a real English class. I think it's okay as a supplementary class but I would not do it as a replacement for English 10. |
Is it a writing/language mechanics class? |
Was this for the English 10 version of AP Seminar? Because if so, in theory they should be covering the English 10 curriculum for MCPS, which definitely involves literature. There is another non-English 10 version of AP Seminar - could that be what your child took? |
| No they don’t cover that. See AP guidelines |
They don’t cover what? |
| My student is reading a novel now, postexam |
What did they read earlier in this year? |
I thought it was just AP Seminar. It's supposed to include reading and be at a higher level, which my kid is looking forward to. |
There are two courses. AP Seminar does not satisfy the English 10 requirement. It has to be the English 10 version of AP Seminar, which was piloted this year. Schools could have either, both, or neither class. |
