Mini Splits

Anonymous
Looking for reviews on brands and contractors that have installed mini splits in your home. If possible can you share cost and year installed and how happy you've been since?

I've just started the process and got a quote from FH FURR for 2-head American Standard 20,000BTU unit (salesperson said identical to Mitsubishi) for $15k or a Lennox 18,000BTU unit for closer to $11k.

Anyone have experiences with those brands?

Thank you!

Get more quotes; FH Furr does not have a good reputation for value

They make the room humid.

We've never had that issue at all and my experience with them goes back decades. My parents put one in for an addition when I was a kid and we have one in our finished, above-ground basement. They're great.

We used Home Depot, they installed the Carrier brand, 30k BTU unit. We had 3 units installed on 3 different floors - basement, attic and master bedroom. It was $20k total (last year).

This is an idiotic comment.

We went with a local HVAC guy and it was half the price as one of the bigger installers. It's crazy to pay 15K for a wall unit.

We installed Carriers in 2016 and they are going strong. I can’t remember technical details about our units, but we paid $13K for two separate compressor units and 6 mini splits. The contractor was OK, but I can’t recommend them because they went MIA when one unit needed a recall-related repair.

If/when these units die I will invest in a Mitsubishi with Hyper Heat. Our mini splits cool really well but have a hard time heating the house.

Same. We paid $5500 total to heat/cool our basement. Zero humidity issues.

We always use a small local guy who does not advertise in a big way. Lower cost and if there are issues later they have their own repair team.

Can you share the name of your local guy? This is an old post, unfortunately, so the poster probably won't see my request.

If others have inexpensive HVAC installers they recommend, please share their info.

+1000 They do! Wall units and window units both increase the humidity for most rooms while HVAC heat pump ac dries the air. No one tells you this until after they're installed!

After getting a few crazy quotes, we bought the units ourselves and paid someone to install them. Probably spent less than 5k. The units themselves cost 1-2k… installation takes a few hours. 15k is a rip off.

When you buy the units yourselves, how does shipping work? Did you keep the units temporarily in your driveway? Just pondering the logistics of this approach.
