In Virginia and Maryland (besides Montgomery County) Is It Possible to be in Algebra II by 8th Grade?

Anonymous
I know that in MCPS advanced kids can take Algebra I in 6th Grade, so can do Geometry in 7th and Algebra II in 8th so by the time they are in 9th, they are ready for pre-calculus in 9th. Is this common in other local jurisdictions?

many kids who take geometry by 8th wind up repeating algebra 1 because they have forgotten a lot of it by the time they get to 9th

Wrong forum.

Yes, Fairfax actually offers honors geometry over the summer for kids desperate to accelerate.

No they don't LOL

If they do then they were not ready for accelerated math.

Right forum. My kid is starting at a private school this Fall and and some kids are being placed in Geometry while others are being placed in Algebra II. I'm looking for background information.

This is really a discussion for the school and what your child's track is. What other schools do is not relevant. What is relevant is what your child is taking this year, which impacts placement next year.

Yes, some publics have that track. Its school specific.

How would any background info gathered from an anonymous forum be more valuable than the school’s evaluation of your student? I bet you think he knows more than he does.

Congressional, Basis and Nysmith will place kids far ahead in math. Don’t know about the publics—you may want to ask in the public school forum.

Our FCPS middle school's Algebra 2 class has 18 8th and one 7th graders.

OP, what you are describing is not common but possible. My DD did this but she was only one of a handful in her school and had to take a test for conceptual readiness in order to take algebra in 6th in her non-mcps Maryland public school.

Yes.
