Why does my mother get so offended about this?

My parents watch the news, both world and local, all day long. They also have AM radio on in their kitchen all day long.

Most days I will briefly catch up on world news or current events while laying in bed as I fall asleep. Usually on Reddit or just stuff that shows up in my social media feeds. Occasionally I listen to a daily news podcast. Honestly, I just don’t care that much, especially about local news. If it’s really big, I always find out by word of mouth from coworkers, friends, DH, my mom (lol), etc.

It never fails that whenever my mom calls, she mentions some obscure local news story and is then utterly aghast, clutching her pearls that I could be so “uninformed”. It’s like she’s personally offended. Someone help me understand why she cares so much and why this bothers her so.

She thinks she's superior for being better informed on the news and is judging you.

If it's your hometown, she wants you to care about it. Especially if it's going downhill.

You do sound sort of dumb. You get informed of current events via Reddit? Maybe she’s embarrassed that she raised a dullard.

Your mom is right and the lack of caring about the world around you—especially locally—is why we’re going to hell in a fast car. Wake up, pay attention and vote.
