Retaking a class without failing

Anonymous
Hello all,

My child is a sophomore- they had some pretty bad mental health issues first 2 quarters of the year and got an F in both quarters in US VA Gov Honors.

Thankfully- they are now doing much better and got a C 3rd quarter, and is looking at a C+ for this quarter. Teacher is not very helpful and it was a rough adjustment as the glass is almost entirely based on a paper ( he didn't do very well on)

Can they retake this course ( DE or Normal as there is no summer HN class ) even though they did not fail it?

We know it will not replace the grade but theyre very adamant in showing an upward trend and trying to fix his GPA.

No. Once a student has passed a class, they cannot be re-enrolled in that class. This happens a lot on the other end of the spectrum- we get EL students from other districts who were clearly just passing the kid along and we do assessments and realize the kid can’t speak any English and is a beginning reader, but because they had “passed” English 9/10 or whatever on the transcript, we can’t go back and enroll them in newcomer English or the intervention class. Even if it’s where they truly belong and what they need. You can only retake classes you failed.

He’s going to have to take the grade he gets and whatever hit that does to his GPA.

This is not true at all. Maybe there are different rules for ESOL specifically, but you absolutely can retake a class. Both grades will show up on your transcript.

They will only get one credit for it. There no real point of retaking since D or the low grade will stay on the transcript.

does your school use rolling gradebook? C+ is not a bad grade, is 3.3 in an honor class. After going to a lot sophomore year that should be okay.

The point is to learn the material. That’s why some do this for math. It’s hard to move on with a D and gaps become wider.

expunge the course by setting up a meeting with your child's counselor. once done, retake the course.

Agree. DS retook Geometry last summer as his academic grade year was a dismal D+. Got an A-. Both grades show up side by side on his transcript.

Impossible to expunge in HS if you pass.

Former HS counselor and now parent to FCPS HS students: You can retake the class, but cannot expunge a passing grade.

Poster who said both grades will show up on transcript is correct.

I am that PP. My DS 2 geometry grades show up on the transcript. He actually brought that up when he was applying for summer internships.
