7 yr old DD constantly gets canker sores

Anonymous
She gets them approximately once a month, sometimes multiple sores at one time. They are painful. Any other parents here who have experience with this? Were you able to identify a cause? Her 8yr well visit is still several months away - I'm wondering if this warrants a separate appt. She takes a steroid inhaler for asthma, nit sure if that could be related.

Yes, this warrants a separate appt. This isn’t normal.

Is she chewing on the inside of her cheeks? I used to do that as a kid, and it caused canker sores.

Supposedly lysine supplements can help avert. I'd check with her ped for sure.

Yes, she needs to be seen.

Most likely nothing but can indicate immune issues.

Make sure her diet is not full of acid items. Like no OJ for example.

I had them constantly my entire childhood and young adult life. At one point they just stopped. I don't know why. I hope medicine has advanced to the point where they can help your daughter.

OJ/oranges and tomatoes for me. They would sit in the fold at the bottom of my gums.

Using tartar control toothpaste can cause them - some people are sensitive to it.

Agree with pp on toothpaste being a cause. I can’t remember which ingredient you are supposed to avoid. I had one child switch to Tom’s of Maine toothpaste and incidents of canker sores went way down. There is also a mouthwash the doctor can prescribe that helps them heal faster.

If I use flonase for more than 2-3 days in a row, I get a canker sore or 2 or 3. It's happened three occasions in a row, so I don't think it's a coincidence.

Change her toothpaste brand. Some cause more sores.

Steroid inhalers can cause yeast infections in your mouth. See the doctor soon.

22:46 here. I meant to add that you should make sure she rinses her mouth after using the inhaler.

I brought this up at my kid’s dentist appointment and they said it can be a sign of vitamin deficiency. I started giving my kids multivitamins in the morning and it seemed to help. I also switched them to toothpaste without SLS full time - they used to only use it when they had canker sores.

And wash the area around her mouth after using the inhaled steroid. Is she using it directly in the mouth with the puffer or an extender? She isn’t using a mask with it is she? My little one developed what looked like bad acne around her mouth bc we were using the steroid with a mask attachment.
I would start with the steroid as a possible cause
