Experiences starting 15 year old on ADHD meds.

15 year old just diagnosed. Wondering if at this age there will be less side effects because of being older. We haven't been to psychiatrist yet for meds. DC is very skinny and worried about losing weight. DS also has a history of tics when stressed or sick. Any med suggestions?

Perhaps he doesn't need meds (unless other options fail). Try executive functioning skills classes, tutors, organizers, and other accommodations. Limit devices. Increase hours of sleep and allow time for a good breakfast.

We had similar concerns about meds. My son (using above tools and maintaining As and Bs all year) learned to get organized, stay on track and is doing well without meds. He says he only occasionally doesn't pay attention when he's tired, bored or his friends are goofing off around him. No negative feedback from teachers all year!

Meds aren't a substitute for a behavior plan. Your DS probably needs a study skills coach, therapist, social skills group, or some plan in place to address the deficits that led to his ADHD diagnosis. Meds help the plan take hold.

It's pretty common for stimulants to affect appetite. DCUM can't tell you which meds would work better with your son's body chemistry.
