Kitchen rug for checkerboard floors

Anonymous
My kitchen has black and white checkerboard vinyl(?) floors. I love them. But they feel like a lot, visually, because the kitchen is large but not large enough to have an island to break it up. Almost dizzying sometimes. I think a couple of runners would help but no idea what might look good with them.

The rest of the kitchen is purpley gray walls and cabinets, white trim, and dark gray stone countertops. All three exterior walls are basically all paned windows on the top half and makes it feel a bit like a solarium but it all feels very cold. I would love to warm it up. I'd like to paint someday but not happening soon.

From googling, a lot of kitchens with your colors/patterns use pops of bright lemony yellow (for paint or rugs or kitchen towels—really cute.
