5th grade SOL practice

Anonymous
My fifth grader brought home review packets and parent sign-off sheets for reading, math and science. They are supposed to study 20-45 minutes 10 times for each subject, and parents are expected to sign off that they did it and mark down what topics they reviewed. Putting aside my feelings about this expectation and the insanity of putting this much pressure on kids for this one particular test, the review packets are just pages and pages of small text. No practice questions - in fact, "do not write on this!" is scrawled across the front. I don't see how staring at text for 45 minutes 10 times is going to make the information sink in if it isn't already there and would like to find some practice questions for my kid to work on. Any ideas where I can find sample tests or worksheets that are similar to the tests?

You could see if your school will share their subscription to SOL Pass.

I would just not do it.

This is for the kids who are in danger of not passing. If that isn't your kid, don't worry about it.

However typically the kids in danger of not passing are also the kids whose parents aren't going to help them review.

Unless they are trying to get into LLIV, there is no reason for a 5th grader to study or even care about SOLs

What is LLIV

Just sign the sheet and send it back. Or don't-they really won't do anything. You don't need to do any review.

Why would you study for the SOLs? It's supposed to measure what your child has retained? If your kid isn't learning, it's valuable for the school to know so that they can provide supports the following year.

I would probably just ignore it. If the teacher says something, send him/her a note explaining why.

jlab is a good place to do practice tests

Schools who really care about pass rates should be doing this at school. We’ve been reviewing for a month!

Teacher here. Disregard the whole thing. Please. This is horrible.
