Kid turned 18, what should I do about access?

Anonymous
I remember folks posted here before on what you should do when your kid turns 18, so you don't lose access to their healthcare decisions/information. Can someone please summarize this again for me? Thanks

Just have a good relationship with your kid. They can sign a release for you for medical information if they want to, but they’re legally an adult and it’s their decision, not yours.

I've found they have to do it for each doctor.

If you have a medical power of attorney, you can make decisions for them, but to access records or make appointments, each physician’s office will have a form he needs to sign to authorize you to receive information.

Why? Why do you need the medical details of other adults?

I used Mama Bear for forms that my kids had notarized when they turned 18 and were heading off for college.

Medical details and healthcare power of attorney can be very important if for whatever reason your child is too sick to make their own healthcare decisions.

Every adult needs to have someone enabled to make healthcare decisions for them if they aren't in a position to do so. It doesn't mean you're sitting in the exam room with them if they don't need you to be there.

If you want to talk to the Dr on their behalf they have to sign the release form for each Doctor.

I have 2 over 18 and I only talk to one Doctor on their behalf to manage ADHD prescriptions and what pharmacy to send them to. Outside of that I have no need to talk to their doctors.
