Strep again

If my kid had strep five weeks ago and has it again now, is that recurrent strep? He tested negative after the first infection. Could it be that he is exposed to someone in his class and got it again? Are the people that need their tonsils removed people that can’t kick the initial infection, or keep getting it via exposure?
Sorry if this is an idiotic question.

I just found out that my child is an asymptomatic strep carrier after having several "surprise" strep tests come up positive with no symptoms; in fact, we went to the doctor for something unrelated but were told "strep was going around" and were tested. Did/does your child have symptoms or no?

If he tested negative it means this is a new infection. Its possible someone around him at home or school is asymptomatic. They won't remove tonsils/adenoids till you get 7 cases of step in a one year period. My DD had hers out and it was a miserable year getting to that point! But no cases of strep since then!

Thank you. At what point do you go to ent? After say, third infection?

Did they put him on antibiotics even though asymptomatic? My kid has a sore throat and nauseous, and his tongue looks weird.

Huh?

Look it up. Common cause of repeat strep.

Did you toss his toothbrush? My kid was infected three times in 6 weeks and we think that was the culprit.

I think we went after the 6th infection. Once the 7th hit we scheduled the surgery. Your pediatrician is not going to refer you to an ENT after the 3rd. Its a good idea to get checked after each infection to make sure its cleared. Alternate antibiotics. Toss toothbrushes and toothpaste. Make sure all cups/water bottles are sanitized. Everyone in our family got tested to make sure we weren't the asymptomatic carrier. (Just tell them at urgent care you have a soar throat so you're insurance will pay for the test). You just tough it out. I don't know who decided 7 is the magic number but it is. My DD hit 7 in just under 10 months. It was not fun - it seemed like she was on antibiotics more than she wasn't. Oh and they won't do the surgery if you have an infection so you have to stay healthy for the surgery date.

My DD have strep all the time and did not have Epstein Bar. We have actually done a lot of EB research and blood work for different reaons and it was never an issue.
She would get strep once a month. She always tested negative in between. When she finally had her tonsils out after a year of repeated strep, she never got it again (that was about ten years ago). The dr told me that the shape of some people's tonsils affects the strep. If your tonsils have deep grooves in them, the bacteria can get trapped inside, then it grows and becomes strep. The antibiotics kill the bacteria, but can't reach the bacteria in the deep grooves, so when you go off antibiotics, initially you are good (test negative), then the bacteria grows again from those trapped areas and turns into strep. Hopefully that helps!

We had this problem last year and threw away my kids' water bottle and it stopped.

You need to get a new round of antibiotics. My DS had multiple strep infections and ended up with impetigo.

Do you have a cat? Serious question.
