Humidity on cool rainy days

Anonymous
Our indoor humidity is 65 with temps around 70 today. Is this normal? We have humidity challenges all summer long, need to get an environmental study done because I think our HVAC is oversized.

But on a cool day like today AC is unlikely to run anyways, so how does the house stay dry?

I assume most people with modern houses aren't doing that right?

The tighter and better insulated a house is the more of a problem humidity is. Better insulated houses run the AC less, tight houses have less natural ventilation.

Inside the house it's always going to be more humid than outside, each occupant releases about five pints of water a day into the air. The ways to get rid of that moisture are either ventilation or dehumidification, either with AC or a dehumidifier.

A typical HVAC system is going to effectively heat your home and cool your home, and dehumidification happens as a secondary result of the a/c running. Dehumidifying doesn't happen well with an oversized a/c unit that cycles on and off. And on days like today, you have to set the temp lower than is comfortable to get the unit to turn on and dehumidify. Newer heat pumps and multi-stage units are far better at dehumidification. Many HVAC systems still are set up as if energy is cheap and all we need is cooling and heating.

As others have said, you need a dehumidifier but, a Lowes or home Depot unit is not going to cut it. Those are room dehumidifiers and all they will do is run up your electric bill. Buy an Aprilaire unit, either E070 or E100 (removes 100 pints per day) and never look back. Energy savings and will easily dehumidify your whole house regardless of your AC running.

Just be slightly uncomfortable for those few days each year.
