Where do A/B students go to college?

Anonymous
I have one kid who is a straight A all APs type of kid. He is gunning for Ivies and other T20 schools. I also have an A/B student who will take some honors and AP classes.

Where do A/B students end up these days?

Back in the nineties, I would think a school like Boston University. Now I am not so sure.

In our case, kids ended up at a T50ish SLAC with great merit aid. They loved their experience and it worked out well for both of them (HS class of 2019 and 2021)

From our NYC private school (not a top school), those kids are going to places like Lehigh, Bucknell, Syracuse, GW, Kenyon, Indiana

Hard to say without also knowing test scores ECs and other hooks.

Agree.
My current senior is mostly As, but some Bs. Some APs (8 total.) 35 on the ACT and some very good, but not outstanding or "hooked" ECs
He will be going to Purdue for engineering.

It depends on what your DC wants. I’d suggest not starting with “what is the highest ranked college this kind of student can get into”. But rather, what do they want to study? What campus size? Geography?

If they want engineering, maybe Purdue, or RPI, RIT, Rose Hullman, or WPI. If a coop/experiential learning, maybe Drexel. If a big state college, experience, maybe UDelaware, or UMass, or Penn State, or NC State.

The first kid - apply to T20, use T50 for targets and safeties

The second kid - apply to T50-75, or go to St. Andrews.

This would be the list from our private school in DC too. I would add Colgate, Colby, Penn State. It used to be Wake and Tulane in ED would be a sure admit for this type of student with high test scores, but this year has been different for both of those schools with not as many getting accepted even in ED.

One of mine ended up at Virginia Tech (not engineering or business) and the other at a LAC in the 60-80 range.

What does “T50ish” mean? 67?

Really? Colby? That surprises me.

These are both fantastic places to end up.

Know what many T20 grads call Lehigh and Bucknell grads on The Street? "Boss."

I don't know about the others, but Purdue engineering isn't an option with B's, especially in math and science.
