It depends (sorry, I hate this answer too but it really does depend).

Here are some things you can do to proactively monitor the situation:

1. take photos of the cracks using a visual reference (a penny, a ruler, whatever). A few months from now, do it again. Did the cracks grow? No change?

2. Have a foundation repair company do a free estimate. Caveat: they are going to try to sell you a product no matter what. Take whatever they tell you with a huge grain of salt. Get 2 opinions, at least. If you want to spend a little money, for peace of mind, get the second opinion from a certified structural engineer.

More likely than not, the cracks you are seeing are your house "settling" not some larger issue. Better safe than sorry, however, and the peace of mind you'll get from tackling the issue is priceless.

Your basement slab floor is not part of your foundation, supporting your house. You could contract to have the whole thing jack hammered and hauled away, leaving you with a dirt floor and it wouldn't make any difference. A crack in the slab is just that, a crack. However, about 4" of the edges of that slab do rest on top of the footing and if the footing is sinking, it can cause a crack to form in the slab. Look for other signs of settlement if you are concerned, or call a foundation repair company for a free inspection and follow the guy around, have him explain how he uses a laser to measure for signs of settlement or anything of concern.
