Travel U12 vs U13

My son has been training with a U11 travel team with the idea that he would likely play travel with them this upcoming year. We recently had the tryouts and we were told he's been placed on a U13 travel team. He just turned 11 and is physically on the smaller side so I really wanted him to be U12. We really like this organization, the training, etc so I'm bummed but don't think he's ready for the full field, etc. seems they may have a combined U12/13 team. I'd def sign him up if it was U12, but I really don't think U13 is right for him. Thoughts? Advice?

nice humble brag, lmao

Ummmm it’s not a brag. I’m concerned that he wouldn’t be ready physically for that age and what other parents thoughts might be.

Does he have a lot of fight in him? If so, he could try it, it can't hurt. And if it doesn't work out, he could switch halfway through the season. Generally smaller and younger players don't exactly excel when moved up as they are less likely to get substantial playing time and can be fairly intimidated.

But, it doesn't hurt to see how the season progresses next fall with a fallback plan to move him back to his own age group and try again next year.

Thank you! I think I’m most concerned about injuries playing with kids so much older (and larger) than him. He’s not a super aggressive player but has strong ball control. He’s also never played on the full field either.

Thank you for some constructive advice!

Switch clubs. If he plays u13 on a team that isn’t winning he will hate life, you will too. It will be a long season with no off ramp.

He's not ready for U13 11v11 on big field.
Find a U12 team and league for his size and abilities.

Not complicated

My son got the same offer when he was trying out last season. The u13 ECNL team was short players so they made an offer to my son. Thank God we didn’t take it because the u13 team that made the offer was terrible this year.

My kid plays for a small club so I hesitate to weigh in but if they are already combining age groups at this young age with less than one team per soccer year before middle and high school sports kick in, it's going to be a slog.

Be careful of a bait and switch. This happened to us a few years ago...offered to play up into ECNL as a small kid. Once the season started the younger, terrible team "needed help". Basically, they knew we wouldn't accept the invite to the younger terrible team, so they baited us with ECNL and then pulled a fast one. We left immediately and don't regret that decision.

If the club has both U12 and U13 teams, and the club thinks your kid is ready for the U13 team, you could always give it a try on the condition that if you think it's not working out he would be dropped back down to the U12 team.

However, if your club only has a combined U12/U13 team that will be competing with U13 teams in the league, then you'd be stuck. If this is the case, I'd try to find another club.

Don't play up. Your parent spidey sense is telling you what to do. Find a U12 team for your son. From what you're telling us, your son isn't early puberty. There are some hitting puberty at U13, some more next year at U14 if your son stays up.
